Ice Fishing Opportunities in Northern Ontario

Ice fishing is growing in popularity more and more each year. Every year new opportunities are made. There are many natural resources for Lake trout, Pickerel, and Herring. The sport of ice fishing is developing new opportunities due to the addition of  stalked lakes in the region. The MNR stalked these lakes with Splake, a lake trout, speckled trout hybrid. Check the regulations before planning your trip because each lake is governed by there own rules. Open seasons for stalked lake change annually, some years a lake can be open all year and closed the next. Looking for stalked lakes try Stevens lake in Northern Ontario.

Stalked lakes are not the only opportunity, great pickerel fishing can be found at  Lac des Mille Lacs. This can be a very comfortable ice fishing trip. The use of fishing shacks is widely used and available for day rentals, it is also common to see trucks parked on the ice. If you rent or build an ice shack it provides good shelter from the cold, and parking your truck on the saves you all that unpacking time and effort.

If you are in the north western region, and looking for somewhere to ice fish don't forget Lake Superior. Herring, Whitefish and Lake trout can be found. Last year I watched a Rainbow trout get pulled through the ice, proving that you never know what you'll find on Lake Superior.
