Ice Fishing opportunities In the Thunder Bay Region
There are many great opportunities for catching fish in the Thunder Bay area, Ice fishing is a great winter sport for the professional angler and the whole family. The Thunder Bay region has many great resources for Speckled trout, Splake, Lake Trout, Herring and Walleye.
If it is lake trout you are after I highly recommend that you try Pickerel lake in Quetico Provincial Park, The parks laws state that motorized vehicles are not allowed on the lakes and these law keep many anglers out. I found that you can access this lake in the winter by using a snowmobile to approach the park boundary then walking the rest of the way. You need to carry all your gear so pack light. No gas powered ice augers are allowed only use barb less hooks, and you are not allowed to use live bate, I always use dead minnows and they work fine.
If walking is not your style, then maybe you should go to fish in lakes with ice roads. This is an easy way to get started without the a lot of work. Please check the ice conditions before driving your vehicle on frozen lakes. I don't have any ice reports yet but some lakes that usually have these ice roads are Lac des Mille Lac and Whitefish Lake. The species of choice in these lakes is Walleye.
Somewhere closer to the city of Thunder Bay to fish but still has and ice road is Lake Superior. Access the lake at Nelson road East of the city of Thunder Bay and fish in the deep waters for lake trout. The ice conditions on lake superior change regularly so use a little caution, typically February has stable ice conditions, however, your best bet is to stay on the main path and fish where other vehicles are.
There are also many stalked lakes in the area. check you regulation to see what lakes are open. These lakes can produce some exceptional Splake and Speckled trout fishing.
