The Elusive Walleye
Catching Walleye can sometimes be difficult especially in un familiar waters, but
if you stick to the basics you should be able to find
fish.
Most important, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. the walleyes are there somewhere.
It may take a little tweaking to figure out there behavior on a daily basis. Fish
for them around structure. By using a sonar you can locate under water rock
piles and drop off or deep holes. If you don't have a sonar look for points on the shore line
they often have a reef that you can troll around or anchor off of. Another way to
find under water structure is to pay attention to where your line gets snagged,
this indicates that there is a change of depth here. I tend to to find fish
around structure in 6 to 25 feet of water. Each lake holds fish at different, so
try different depth.
Other structure are weed beds. These can be seen later in the summer, but if you
know the lake well enough, early summer weed beds are still there even if you
can't see them. Fish the edges of weed beds.
Move around. Don't get trapped sitting in one spot. I like to troll
95% of the time that I fishing. By doing this you can cover more ground. You can
try fishing a little deeper, then move in shallow, and you never need to take
your line out of the water. you will never catch a fish if you don't put your
line in the water.
Time, I don't think this is a secret but, all Walleye anglers know that the most
productive time to catch Walleye is first thing in the morning and just before
dark. It's ok to fish during the day it can still be very productive. The
weather plays a bigger role during the day. Overcast and a little wind is ideal
for Walleyes. Presentation, The bait you use and the means at which you present it can make
all the difference.
THE TWO BEST LURES EVER for catching lots of Walleye are a jig and a spinner with LIVE bait. These
simple little devices are time tested and proven. There great because there are
cheep and light weight, so you can carry lots of them and they come in a wide
variety of color. They can be even cheaper if you make them your self.
Experiment with different colors, if one is not working try another. I like to
start with silver or gold, if these are not producing I like Bronze, Blue,
yellow, orange, copper, shartuse, and hot pink. If all else fails change the
speed of your presentation. Try anchoring to get less active fish, or speed up a
bit and use a diving lure with lots of action to it this will encourage a more
active fish to bite. GOOD LUCK!
